Tomatoes in January...

Sharon Iezzi grew these fine tomatoes in January.

Gardening in December and January?
Maybe it is not the most common
practice for gardeners of this area,
but for Sharon Iezzi, winter gardening
was grand.
She planted some seed in late summer
in a container. Once the seeds
sprouted and seedlings appeared, this
particular seedling was transplanted
into a pot for what would be an
experiment for the Iezzi's. Could
they grow a tomato in the midst of
winter in a pot on their patio?
Sure they could and the proof is in
the large red tomato and the others
left to ripen on the vine. The tomato
vine was moved indoors at night when
temperatures dipped near or below
freezing and brought back out during
the day for sunning. Nothing but
Miracle Grow and organic fertilizers
were used to grow the vine.
Last week Sharon Iezzi reaped the
fruits of her labor and picked a vine
ripened beauty. Gardening is a
favorite for the Iezzi's and even
though it sometimes comes in a
smaller setting, container gardening
and box gardening seem to fit them
just fine.
